UPDATE: Hole Singer Loses Libel Match: $430,000-Love.

Image by Getty Images via @daylifeFollowing up on a "TUOL" post on 2/2/11, actress, Hole lead vocalist, and all-around non-role model Courtney Love has put an end to the defamation suit brought against her by fashion designer Boudoir Queen Dawn Simorangkir. 

Based on her 20-minute Tweet-fest of harsh comments against the plaintiff in 2009, including calling her a "nasty, lying hosebag thief," and a prostitute and drug addict,  Love will pay Dawn Simorangkir $430,000, beginning with a payment today, and continuing through 2014, according to a report in today's Hollywood Reporter legal Web site, THR, Esq. 

The case, Dawn Simorangkir a/k/a Dawn Younger-Smith v. Courtney Michelle Love et al. (Case No. BC41059), was scheduled for trial In Los Angeles County Superior Court, and promised to address novel legal issues, such as how to calculate damage to one's reputation in the Twittersphere. With the lawsuit behind her, the defendant can resume being Nirvana lead singer Kurt Cobain's widow.

UPDATE: Is Courtney Done With Court?

Cover of Courtney LoveOnpointnews.com reports the Twitter libel suit brought against grunge chanteuse/Kurt Cobain widow Courtney Love by "Boudoir Queen" clothing designer Dawn Simorangkir (see "TUOL" posts 1/7/11, 8/25/09), slated to begin Feb. 8, has been pulled off the Los Angeles Superior Court trial list, prompting speculation that a settlement is in the offing.

Counsel for Dawn Simorangkir a/k/a Dawn Younger-Smith v. Courtney Michelle Love et al (Case No. BC41059) are purportedly due back in court March 4 for a status conference concerning settlement negotiations.

The plaintiff claims she was defamed by 10 angry Tweets from the defendant. Love's attempt to dismiss the suit on 1st Amendment grounds was derailed by the court in 2009, which found the Tweets at issue did not constitute speech about a matter of public concern.

Love's has taken a no-settlement posture up to this point, but it's looking more and more as if the allegedly harmed Boudoir Queen will be made "Hole" as it were.

Mediabistro.com's FishbowlLA and Hollywood Reporter's THR-Esq.'s Web sites are atwitter over the defamation trial scheduled for Feb. 6 involving Kurt Cobain's widow, singer/actress Courtney Love, and fashion designer Dawn Simorangkir.

Simorangkir sued Love in Los Angeles Superior Court last year (Dawn Simorangkir a/k/a Dawn Younger-Smith a/k/a Boudoir Queen v. Courtney Michelle Love and Does 1-25 inclusive, Case No. BC41059), alleging defamation, invasion of privacy, and intentional infliction of emotional distress, among other claims, arising from purported Tweets by Love. (See "TUOL" post 8/25/09.)

Love, the vocalist for Hole, allegedly called Simorangkir a prostitute, drug addict and a "nasty, lying hosebag thief" according to the plaintiff's complaint.  Beyond the tabloid interest generated by the controversial Love's involvement, the case offers the legal novelty of the anticipated testimony by social media expert Jesse Stricchiola, whom the plaintiff has retained to quantify the purported damage done to Simorangkir's reputation by the alleged Tweets. Gauging how many people saw the allegedly offensive Tweets and how the microbloggers perceived them poses a challenge to Stricchiola.

Boudoir Queen to Love: 'See You in Courtney'

On her Website, www.courtneylove.com, 45-year-old Courtney Love, lead singer of the alternative rock band Hole and widow of Nirvana rock icon Kurt Cobain, describes herself as an amalgam of musician, actress, songwriter, activist, celebrity, provocateur. Add to that list: libel defendant.

Dawn Simorangkir, an Austin, Tex.-based fashion designer who operates the "Boudoir Queen" line of clothing, sued Love in Los Angeles County Superior Court, alleging defamation, false light invasion of privacy, intentional infliction of emotional distress, breach of contract and tortious interference with economic advantage(Dawn Simorangkir a/k/a Dawn Younger-Smith a/k/a Boudoir Queen v. Courtney Michelle Love and Does 1-25 inclusive, Case No. BC41059).

Love has the distinction of being the first celebrity to be sued for defamation over her alleged Tweets. Simorangkir claims her reputation was impugned by Love on the singer's Twitter account, MySpace blog, and on the plaintiff's feedback page at www.etsy.com. Love has filed a motion to strike the lawsuit under California's anti-SLAPP law.

The plaintiff alleges Love failed to pay her for custom designed clothing, which Love disputes. As the dispute grew more acrimonious, the plaintiff alleged that Love fired off a series of libelous statements, such as purportedly calling her a drug addict, prostitute, and a "nasty, lying hosebag thief," and allegedly Tweeting: "oi vey, don't f*** with my wardrobe or you will end up in a circle of corched eath hunted til your dead."

Well, presumably, it was a first draft.

Of course, the plaintiff must prove not only that these comments are attributable to Love, but also that they are false and caused harm to her reputation, which requires that others believed the statements at issue. Were the Boudoir Queen to prevail, any judgment would doubtless put Courtney in a real Hole.
