Bad (Newport) News and 'Trib-ulations' for Daily Press

In a cost-cutting measure that parent company the Tribune Co. hopes will realize $1 million in savings, The Daily Press of Newport News,. Virginia, will outsource most of its copy-editing and production to The Chicago Tribune.

The Daily Press is likely to slash its editorial staff of 84 by 10 percent, giving pink slips to most of its designers and copy editors. Daily Press Publisher Digby Solomon confirmed that the soon-to-be-laid-off newsroom employees will be told next week that their jobs are being eliminated, which presumes that the staffers aren't reading newspapers either.

Weather, comics,  national and international wire stories, and other "non-local" news will be handled by the Chicago Tribune's "central desk." Locally produced stories requiring some expertise and knowledge about Virginia will be assigned and edited by The Daily Press staff  who survive the ax.
