The good news, according to MediaFinder.com, the largest online periodical database of Canadian and American magazines, is that 275 magazines debuted in 2009.
The bad news? The 428 journals that went belly-up.
Curiously, regional magazines were the principal source both of start-ups and shutdowns. Health and food magzines proved the most successful entries in 2009 (not you, Gourmet), while business, lifestyle, and real estate publications struggled.
Nowadays, the term "magazine fallout" has nothing to do with the "Bingo" subscribe cards that drop to the floor when the periodical is opened.
